Mattress and sleep are two connected vessels. We sleep on a mattress for an average of 7 hours a day, spending 1/3 of our total life on it. A standard mattress has a lifespan of up to 5-7 years on average and a premium mattress has a lifespan of 10-15 years, making it the longest used piece of furniture in our home.

Mattress Cleaning and Mould

Mold are microscopic fungi that are a natural part of our environment. They are commonly present in the soil, on plants and in the air, but in our homes mould can occur where they have a damp and dark environment. One place where mold often appears is in mattresses. Since people spend almost a third of their lives sleeping, the quality and cleanliness of the mattress has a major impact on their health.

Mold is insidious. It can cause respiratory illnesses and allergies, which is why you need to remove it from your mattress as soon as you notice it has appeared. If mould is on the mattress cover, spray it with an anti-mould disinfectant and machine wash it at the highest temperature recommended by the manufacturer. If a small amount of mould has appeared on the mattress itself, try removing it with an anti-mould product. However, if the mould extends deep into the mattress, it is better to leave it to the professionals.

Why does mould appear in mattresses?

MoldMold needs three basic factors to grow: moisture, heat and organic material. Unfortunately, a mattress can meet all of these conditions. During sleep, the human body releases heat and sweat, which creates the ideal humidity. Other causes of humidity can be drinks spilled in the bed or poor ventilation of the room. Combined with organic material from the mattress surface or cover, mold can spread quickly.

Risk factors for mould growth in mattresses

  • Poor room ventilation – if the room is not well ventilated, moisture can build up.
  • High environmental humidity – homes with high humidity are more likely to have mold growth.
  • Quality of mattress – some materials are more susceptible to moisture and mold, such as foam mattresses.
  • Inappropriate mattress placement – mattresses placed directly on the floor or on a poorly ventilated pad are more susceptible to mold growth.

Health risks of mould in mattresses

Contact with mold can cause allergic reactions and other health problems. Some of the main problems associated with mold include:

  • Respiratory problems: People may suffer from coughing, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing when inhaling mold spores, especially people with asthma.
  • Skin reactions: Skin irritation may occur when direct contact with mold occurs.
  • Weakening of the immune system: Prolonged exposure to mold can lead to a weakening of the immune system, increasing the risk of illness.

How to identify mold on a mattress

Identifying mold on a mattress is not always easy, as it is not visible to the naked eye in the early stages. Common signs of mold growth on a mattress include:

  • Unusual odor: Mold often produces a musty or rotten smell.
  • Mold stains on mattress: Mold can produce dark or greenish stains.
  • Respiratory difficulties: If symptoms of breathing difficulties only occur during sleep or after waking, the mattress may be the cause.

How to prevent mattress mould

Mold

  • Sleep on a bed with a slatted or slatted mattress
  • Ventilate regularly
  • Eliminate moisture in the room
  • Turn and air the mattress regularly
  • Don’t make the bed as soon as you get out of it, but let it air out

You will spend a third of your life on your mattress, so it is extremely important to keep it clean. If you vacuum it every 14 days and air it regularly, you can go to bed feeling like you’re sleeping in a clean and safe environment.

Mold prevention in mattresses

To minimise the risk of mould on mattresses, it’s important to follow a few precautions:

  • Ventilating the room regularly – this will reduce the humidity in the environment
  • Use of dehumidifiers – particularly suitable in environments with high humidity
  • Regular turning and airing of the mattress – improves ventilation and reduces humidity
  • Use of a mattress protector – protectors are often impermeable and can be more easily washed and cleaned
  • Regular dry disinfection with a UV-C lamp/mattress machine
  • Regular dry disinfection with OZONE / mattress vacuum machine

How to clean a mattress infected with mould

If mould has already formed on your mattress, there are ways to clean it:

Vacuuming the mattress: A vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter can remove surface mold spores.

Cleaning with a hydrogen peroxide or vinegar solution: The solution can be gently rubbed over the mould, but too much moisture should be avoided.

Sunlight: Placing the mattress in direct sunlight can help destroy some types of mold.

UV-C lamp: We recommend entrusting your mattress to industry professionals who have a UV-C germicidal mattress lamp.

OZON: we recommend entrusting your mattress to industry professionals who have the BIO-OZON vacuum cleaning system.

Mold-resistant mattress

When choosing a mattress, it is a good idea to choose materials that are less prone to mould growth. Latex mattresses have natural antifungal properties, and mattresses with a breathable core can also help minimize the risk of mold, bacteria, mites and viruses.

Mold, bacteria, viruses and mites are not only a hygiene issue in mattresses, but also a health issue. However, with proper prevention, maintenance and the right choice of mattress, the risks can be significantly reduced. Even the thickest sheets and blankets cannot protect us from micro-particles. Dust mites or moulds, which often number up to one million and produce allergy-causing faeces that settle in our mouths, noses, eyes, etc. every time we move. In addition to the allergy manifesting as itching, mucous membrane inflammation, bronchitis, asthma and shortness of breath can be added. These conditions can be prevented by professional cleaning and deep dry disinfection with UV-C radiation or vacuum ozonation of the mattress with a thorough machine vacuum.
